Four arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms

The Tshwane Metro Police Tactical Unit members arrested four suspects for possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

Senior Superintendent Issac Mahamba of the Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department said in the first instance the members received a tip-off on 7 May 2021 around 17h00 about a male suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in the Atteridgeville area.

TMPD Tactical Unit members acted swiftly on the information provided and a man matching the description of the suspect was spotted at Sekhu and Maunde Street in Atteridgeville.

“When the suspect saw the officers, he tried to run but was immediately apprehended. He was searched and was found with a Glock 19 pistol and ammunition” Senior Superintendent Mahambahe said.

The firearm was checked and it was discovered that it belonged to Tshwane Metro Police Department and was reported stolen in 2018.

“More information led the officers to three more suspects who were driving a white Toyota Avanza vehicle in the same area. The said vehicle was spotted and stopped with three male occupants inside,” he said.

Senior Superintendent Mahamba said the suspects were searched and were found with two illegal firearms and ammunition. All four suspects were arrested for possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. The firearms recovered will be investigated further.
