Two prisoners have escaped from Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria on December 8.

The escaped prisoners have been identified as Thabo Zacharia Muyambo, a Mozambican national who was serving life for 21 counts including rape, robbery, and kidnapping and, Johannes Chauke from Zimbabwe who was serving 20 years for housebreaking and other crimes.

It is alleged that the two inmates used a sharp object to dig a hole through the wall of their cell in A section. The object is believed to have been stolen from the prison’s workshop.

The Department of Correctional Services has launched a manhunt for the recapture of the fugitives. Members of the Emergency Support Team from Correctional Services are hot on the heels of the escaped prisoners together with the South African Police Service.

The Department of Correctional Services has also initiated internal investigations into the incident. Members of the public are urged to contact the nearest police station should they come into contact with the escapees.
