During COVID-19 Level 5 Lockdown when people were supposed to stay at home peacefully with their families, statistics of gender-based violence (GBV) increased caused by the number of women and children who were physically and emotionally abused.

Due to the increasing numbers, yesterday, Voice it in Action, a group of young men and women marched to the Union Buildings to hand over a memorandum demanding that the scourge of GBV be attended to.

Kgothatso Moloto,  the founder and president of Voice it in Action said, “GBV was declared a pandemic by the president but no action is being taken against this pandemic which is resulting in GBV being a way of life in South Africa.

“We know that we need to follow protocol like everyone, however, we have sent countless emails to the President’s office with no response. The more time we waste the more women and children we lose.

“From here we will be marching to parliament and we urge more people to join us in all provinces until we are answered,” he said.

The group said they believe there are social and economic ways to reduce GBV and demanded that all cases of GBV be resolved before the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV.

They also demanded that all proposals to end GBV be implemented.
