Exhibition stands and testing stations were set up at the hospital

Kalafong hospital conducted an outreach program to mark World Aids Day through exhibitions and testing stations for HIV and Aids and TB.

Units were set up with trained professionals assisting residents with information such as the message that even though Aids cannot be cured, it is one of the most easily manageable chronic diseases.

“Unlike in the past, managing Aids has become so much easier now because a patient only has to take one pill now and what is important is for patients to be consistent with their time of taking medication.

Outreach programs conducted on digital platforms

“Patients also have to know the benefits of taking ARVs regularly and the importance of treatment buddies,” said the unit manager Matron Elizabeth Sewelo.

Hospital staff also conducted a health talk campaign at the facility at the patient department clinic’s waiting areas. The hospital also used digital platforms for its outreach on radio and social media to avoid mass gatherings.

Kalafong communication officer Mr Given Makhuvele said “the public education emphasized the importance of getting tested, taking treatment accordingly, social support for HIV patients and eradicating stigmatization”.
