Mr Josesph Matthews Seshego Latakgomo: 13 January 1948 - 22 February 2026

Atteridgeville Community Hall – The community of Atteridgeville gathered today to honour the life and legacy of Mr Joseph Matthew Seshego Latakgomo, affectionately known as Bra Joe, who passed away on 22 February 2026. Mr Latakgomo was a prominent figure in journalism, community engagement, and social justice advocacy.

Born on 13 January 1948, Bra Joe received his early education in the local Bantu Education system, where he first developed his passion for storytelling and journalism. His illustrious career began in the 1960s, and he held key roles at various media outlets, eventually serving as Executive Editor of The World and Weekend World. He was recognised for his commitment to amplifying the voices of the unheard, particularly during the challenging times of apartheid.

In recognition of his significant contributions, Mr Latakgomo was granted a Category Two Special Official Provincial Funeral by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The ceremony was attended by Premier Panyaza Lesufi, who honored Mr Latakgomo’s legacy in his official capacity, highlighting the loss felt throughout the province.

The funeral service opened with tributes from family, colleagues, and friends, reflecting on his profound impact. The emotional ceremony was a testament to Mr Latakgomo’s contributions to journalism and his spirit for equity and justice.

Reverend NS Mudau led the ceremonial service, capturing the essence of Mr Latakgomo’s life as a mentor and leader.

In a touching tribute to his far-reaching impact, a moment of silence was observed before the highly anticipated Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership. Players, officials, and thousands of supporters stood in solemn remembrance before kickoff. Orlando Pirates went on to secure a commanding 3–0 victory over Chiefs, marking another memorable derby encounter, as the football community joined the nation in honouring Bra Joe’s legacy.

He is survived by his wife, Angie, and children and grandchildren, who shared moving stories of his love and dedication to family, highlighting his role as a father and grandfather.

A special burial ceremony at Olivenhoutbosch Cemetery served as a final farewell, followed by a gathering at the Atteridgeville Community Hall, where family and friends shared moments and memories over a meal.

Joseph Matthew Seshego Latakgomo was not just a beloved journalist; he was a visionary who paved the way for many and served as a beacon of hope and resilience for the community. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.
