Post Office uniform that was confiscated by the police

A 41-year-old man was shot and later died in hospital by a group of men who robbed the Atteridgeville Post office of an undisclosed amount of money on 18 November 2020.

A provincial multidisciplinary team was put together to trace the alleged robbers after the police received a complaint of a business robbery that took place at the post office.

The team was able to arrest the five suspects believed to be behind the armed business robbery and arrested them on 26 November 2020.

It is alleged that on the day of the robbery, two of the five men arrested entered the Post Office disguised in Post Office uniform and allegedly held staff and clients at gunpoint.

After the robbery, the community tried to apprehend the five men and that is when they shot the 41-year-old man to fighting their way out.

The Police later establish that the Post Office uniform was obtained from an employee of the post who is one of the five men arrested. During the arrest, the police seized post office uniforms and a vehicle suspected to have been used during the robbery.

The acting provincial commissioner of police in Gauteng, Major General Patricia Rampoto, commended the success of the multi-disciplinary task team.

“The police will be on the lookout for criminals who are trying to make quick money at the expense of law-abiding citizens during the festive season.

“Further investigations will be conducted to ascertain that the five are not linked to other crimes,” the Major General said.

The suspects will appear before the court in due course on charges of business robbery and murder.
