Four people were arrested for illegal electricity reconnections, possession of stolen cables and damaging and tampering with essential infrastructure on Friday 11 March 2022 in Pretoria West Luttig Street and Akasia Pretoria North.
The suspects were arrested by the Tshwane Metro Police Department and Cable Theft Unit after the members received a complaint and tip-offs.
The officers followed up on a tip-off about suspicious activity in Pretoria West and found three suspects illegally reconnecting electricity that was disconnected earlier as part of the City’s revenue collection campaign, TshwaneYaTima.
On the same day, a joint operation regarding cable theft was conducted by the Tshwane Metro Police cable theft unit, SAPS, and, other law enforcement agencies. During the operation, a vehicle was stopped and searched in Akasia Pretoria North and stolen copper cables were discovered in the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle tried to offer a bribe of R5000 and was arrested for possession of suspected stolen cables and bribery.
Two more suspects were arrested for possession of ammunition and another for drunk driving. A total number of 131 vehicles were searched during the operation.
“I would like to thank all the residents who worked with the City and for reporting suspected illegal activity. Our #TshwaneYaTima revenue – collection campaign is ongoing and we intend to also disconnect defaulting residential areas,” said the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Mr Randall Williams.
