Residents in Centurion say cable theft continues to disrupt their daily lives, despite the recent arrest of a suspect found in possession of stolen copper cables by the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD).
A male suspect was arrested on Thursday, 07 May 2026, by the Tshwane metro police after officers allegedly caught him digging and cutting electrical cables next to an electric box during a targeted operation in the area.
According to a statement issued by the TMPD Communication Unit, officers had been strategically deployed when they noticed the suspect behaving suspiciously. Upon approaching him, he did not provide a satisfactory explanation for his actions and was arrested on the scene. He was later detained at a local police station and is expected to appear in court.
Despite the arrest, community members say cable theft stays a problem affecting both households and businesses.
“I’ve experienced several power outages this year because of cable theft. It disrupts everything, from our safety to our daily routines. One arrest does not solve the bigger problem.” Said Angela Van Rooyen a resident in Centurion.
Phumelo Molefe, another resident, said the situation has also heightened safety concerns. “When the electricity goes off, the area becomes dark and dangerous. It’s especially worrying at night because crime tends to increase.” She said.
Local business owner Simphiwe Dlamini said the ongoing theft has had a direct financial impact. “Power interruptions affect our operations and sometimes damage equipment. We lose customers and money every time this happens. It is frustrating because it keeps happening.” He said.
The TMPD has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to their nearest police offices.
Pheli Times attempted to obtain further comment from the TMPD spokesperson about the extent of cable theft in Centurion, but no response was received. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon, where he will face charges related to possession of stolen property.
Residents, meanwhile, continue to call for stronger and more effective measures to curb cable theft and protect critical infrastructure in their community.
